The concept of Geographical Indication (GI) certification

Agricultural products GIs have been introduced in France in 1934, and are proven to grant positive outcomes at producers’ side :

  • GIs are the most effective way to internationally brand products which are unique to specific regions, and made following to local traditions,
  • GIs often induce micro-producers to operate as a Consortium, therefore allowing an overall harmonization of the chain of production following to common production guidelines (best code of practice) drafted by the relevant key stakeholders,
  • well managed GIs’ branding often allows visibility to the regions products are made at, therefore boosting the overall growth of service companies, side industries and tourism,
  • EU consumers notably are willing to pay a premium price for GI certified quality products,

and at consumers’ side:

  • GIs ensure end consumers about products’ genuine quality and their origin, opposed to counterfeit products,
  • GIs are a powerful tool for branding unique products, thanks also to the obligation to publicly publish certified products’ code of production which allow end consumers full and open information for them to appreciate their buying.

Protection of GIs is established at international level by World Trade Organization (WTO) Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS)

Article 22, Protection of Geographical Indications (GIs)

“Geographical indications are indications which identify a good as originating in the territory of a Member, or a region or locality in that territory, where a given quality, reputation or other characteristic of the good is essentially attributable to its geographical origin“.

Mongolia Intellectual Property Office (IPOM) issued to MNFPUG GI protection for its Sustainable Cashmere and other Noble Fibers in 2020-21.

MNFPUG is now applying for EU IGP protection (rectius homologation) of its national Mongolian GIs, as provided by WTO reciprocity treaties.

Our Sustainable Cashmere’s GIs are the most powerfull quality label which guarantees to the consumers:

  • the origin of the product;
  • the characteristics of the product;
  • the link between those characteristics and its origin;
  • that the product specifications have been audited by third party organizations approved by the Government.

We’re proud that our GIs are instruments in the the conservation of local, cultural heritage and traditional production methods, which deliver a strong marketing tool for Nomadic Herder Households and Cooperatives, to the benefit of Mongolia’s rural areas, as an asset to ensure Fair and Ethical Competition and Sustainable Development for new generations !

No other Cashmere in the world comes with a GI certification; this is why MNFPUG’s Sustainable Cashmere is so unique and precious.

MNFPUG’s Traceability System and its GI Certifications ensure Consumers about the Quality of the products they’re buying, and their related History, Culture and Tradition, supporting Mongolia to keep Millenary Nomadic Traditions alive … ♥
